My love for Kwik Stix is no secret. It is seriously the easiest way to paint, especially with kids. It makes very little mess and the paint easily washes off of hands, tables, etc. Because they are paint sticks, you don't need paintbrushes. Seriously, so easy. You can read about the other sets of Kwik Stix paints that we've played with HERE and HERE. When I heard that they had a Metalix line, I couldn't wait to try it out. Metallic goodness? Um, yes please. The Metalix includes 6 paint sticks that have a shimmer to them. They aren't what I would call glittery, they have more of a shimmery look. I noticed that the shimmer tends to show up after the paint has dried. My favorites were the gold and silver. Since we've played with Kwik Stix before, I wanted to try something new this time. I let the girls do their own thing and paint on paper, while I worked on a little home decor project. We have a wall of J's going up our stairs that is a collection of different sizes, fonts, colors and materials. I've had a white laminate one that I've wanted to paint so I pulled that out.
I did one coat at a time of the gold and let it dry. It still took the 90 seconds to dry, maybe a little longer but we were also outside and it was hot. I did 3 coats to get a darker gold. I also painted in circles to try to give it more of a texture. It was a little tricky to get into the corners on the edges but it was an easy fix for an otherwise boring letter.
My husband came home and saw the J and the girls' paintings and he started encouraging me to try different materials. He suggested a shirt. I didn't think it would work, but I was up to the challenge. I went with a simple dot design. I even used parchment paper and heated the shirt, the way you do with fabric paint. I flipped it inside out and washed it normally.
So, it was sort of a fail. Tempera paint is not designed to be fabric paint. The shirt came out faded. I guess the good news is that if you get the paint on your shirt, there are no worries of it staying on your shirt permanently.
One final project we worked on was binoculars. My oldest has been begging to make these after seeing some girls wearing them at the zoo last week. She was frantically trying to collect toilet paper rolls. We made them quickly with washi tape and string and then she took our Metalix Kwik Stix and started painting the binoculars. Easy and fun! So easy I let her paint while I was in another room. My husband walked in from work at this point and it is always humorous for me to see him tense up when the kids are painting but when Kwik Stix are involved, I have no worries. I know there will be minimal mess and they can't get into too much trouble. Even when the little one paints all over her hands, I know it will easily wash off.
