Preview: This ten frame game to practice more and less is perfect to work on number sense in kindergarten. Ideal for working on subitizing and introduction to addition and subtraction.
Working with ten frames and learning to subitize is a critical skill for building number sense in preschool and kindergarten. My daughter's class has been working on this throughout the year, but they recently started asking the questions, "What would 2 more be?" and "What would 2 less be?"
To help her work on this skill, I made this Bug Themed Ten Frame Game More and Less. It works on two more and two less for numbers 1-20, but it also has the option to write in any number for the more and less part so you can adapt it to the needs of your students. This was perfect after reading some of our new favorite bug books this week.

Setting up the Ten Frame Games
Supplies Needed:
Bug Ten Frame Cards (free download below)
Game Board (free download below)
Slide game boards into the page protectors or laminate them. Cut apart the ten frame cards (there are multiple cards for each number 1-20). You can laminate these for durability if you want.
To Play the Ten Frame Games
To play, pick a ten frame card and set it in the rectangle in the middle. Figure out the number that is represented on the ten frame. Then determine what two more would be. Write that number in the right column with the dry erase marker.
Then figure out what two less would be and write that number in the left column. Pick another ten frame card and repeat the process. Once the game board is full, remove the ten frame cards and erase the numbers written on it and play again. Continue until you've gone through the deck of cards.
Because some students are beyond numbers 1-10, I also made ten frame cards that go up to 20. These were more of a challenge to my daughter as we worked through the teen numbers. They have really been working on numbers 1-10 at school, so those come very automatically to her after she looks at the ten frame. Numbers 11-20 took a little longer for her to figure out. This would be a great game to differentiate for your students. Students that are ready for more of a challenge can work on the higher cards, and students that still need the 1-10 practice can use those cards. Then figure out what two less would be and write that number in the left column. Pick another ten frame card and repeat the process. Once the game board is full, remove the ten frame cards and erase the numbers written on it and play again. Continue until you've gone through the deck of cards.
I also created a version of the game board that doesn't have the number 2 at the top. Now you can write any number at the top depending on your students' ability levels.
We practiced with one more, one less. We played the game the exact same way - picked out a ten frame card, set it in the middle, figured out what one more would be, wrote it down, figured out what one less would be, wrote it down.
I've made this game a freebie for you! Keep reading to grab your free download at the bottom of this post.
