Learning addition requires a lot of practice to make those math facts automatic. I love making that practice more fun by turning it into a game. Penguin addition games are simple print and play two player games.
With just a few supplies, students can get to work practicing math facts by number. Because each gameboard focuses on a different number (between 1 and 10), you can easily differentiate for your students and have them work on the facts that they need more practice on.

Supplies Needed for Penguin Addition Games
The beauty of these games is that they really don't require much to play.
- Printable Board Games (free download below)
- Spinner (could also use a pencil and spin a paperclip on it as a spinner)
- 10 pieces per player (mini erasers work perfectly for this. The ones pictured are from Target's seasonal dollar spot. Similar ones HERE)
- Cardstock
- Laminator (optional)
To Prep Penguin Addition Games
Prep for these games is minimal which makes them even easier to use with your students. It is basically just a print and play game. You can laminate the games if you plan to use them yearly. Then set out a spinner (or have students just use a pencil and paperclip) and game pieces for each student (10 each.) I like to use mini erasers, but you could use anything - math manipulatives, scraps of paper, etc.
To Play Penguin Addition Games
- Print out the board you want to use. Numbers 1-10 are included.
- Player 1 spins the spinner and adds the number they land on to the big number on the bottom of the game board (we played on the number 3 game board in the pictures).
- Player 1 puts one of their ten pieces on that number.
- Player 2 spins and then adds the number they land on to the number at the bottom.
- Player 2 puts one of their ten pieces on that number. If the other player has a piece on that spot, they can BUMP it off.
- If the same player lands on the same place twice, they add a second game piece and that spot is now locked and can't be bumped.
- Play continues until a player uses all 10 of their pieces and they are declared the winner.
