The sacraments are a special time when we meet Jesus and celebrate God's grace. We receive God's life and love through the seven sacraments and they help us to do God's will.
Studying the sacraments is something that happens at a variety of grade levels. There is so much to be said about each sacrament - you could write books on each one, and many have!
I wanted to created a Sacraments Lapbook for Catholic Kids to help teach them about each sacrament. I spent so much time researching, reading the Catechism of the Catholic church, looking at textbooks and studying grade level standards to try to create a product that can be used at a variety of levels. Not only will this work for multiple grade levels, but you could even use the different levels in your classroom to meet the needs of each of your students.
Supplies Needed for Sacrament Lapbooks
I want to lead with this because I often get asked where you get those file folders - probably for two reasons: I often use colored folders and I refold them so they are a tri fold. You don't buy them that way but I think that throws people off. Here is what you will need to make these lapbooks with your Catholic kids.
Glue
Scissors
Stapler
Crayons/colored pencils/markers
The two supplies you will need to purchase are the digital file for the lapbook and file folders. These can be found on Amazon or in an office supply store. You use the standard file folders, but you will refold it into thirds. I like to use colored folders, but the standard color will work too. You could also print the lapbook pieces on colored paper if you want to add a pop of color.
Options for Differentiating
When I was researching and creating this, I really wanted a lapbook that could work for multiple grade levels. Students in first grade talk about the sacraments and fifth graders take a deep dive into them too. With such a range of ages, it is hard to make a resource that fits everyone's needs. I decided to create 4 different versions that are all available in the same download.
Really what varies the most is how complex the mini books are.
Option one is the most basic. It includes a simple sentence that describes the sacrament. It also includes pictures that are some of the signs and symbols of the sacraments.
Option 4 is the most challenging and open-ended version. It has the structure of option 2, but it is blank. Students will need to research and learn about the sacraments and fill it out in their own words. If they are stuck, refer to the other options or send them to the Catechism of the Catholic Church where this information can be found.

The Inside of the Sacraments Lapbooks
Students will make little mini books for each sacrament once they learn about it. They will staple them at the top or side so that they can lift the pages like a book.
Sacrament Sort Options
Each lapbook has a sacrament sort that goes right in the middle of the lapbook. This is designed to review all of the sacraments as a final activity.
There are two different options.
The second option is a little more complex, but it can be used over and over again as a review. For this option, students will create pockets for each sacrament.
They will glue just around the 3 edges with the dotted lines, and then add the cover.
Once the pockets are formed, they have strips of paper to cut and sort. These include words and phrases related to the sacraments. There isn't an equal number for each sacrament to make it more of a challenge and some words pertain to more than one sacrament. They can flip back in their mini books to double check their answers. A teacher answer key is also included.
