10 (not spooky) Halloween Picture Books for Kids

At our house, the change of seasons or upcoming holiday means a new set of books to set out and display. Most of these books came directly from my classroom when I taught, with a few newer titles we've bought the girls throughout the years.

I thought it would be fun to do a round up of 10 of our favorite Halloween picture books for kids. Many of these are classics - books I remember reading as a kid or inherited for my classroom. They are still in print and chances are many kids have never heard of these!
Ten beloved Halloween picture books for kids that aren't spooky or scary. Some oldies but goodies and some newer titles included.

Room on the Broom is a fan favorite. The witch loses her hat, bow and wand in the wind and other animals help her to find them in exchange for a ride on the broom. Soon the broom is packed and they aren't sure there will be any more room.

The Crayons Trick or Treat
is part of The Day the Crayons Quit series. My girls love these books. There is always hilarious little comments from the crayons written like speech bubbles. This one has a Halloween theme as the crayons go trick or treating but don't know what to say.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything is an oldie but goodie. In this book, different items try to scare the old lady as she walks through the woods. Lots of good sound words that stand out in the text, so you can use this to teach onomatopoeia.

The Biggest Pumpkin Ever is a classic fall book I remember reading when I was younger. Two mice have plans for their giant pumpkin. One wants to carve a giant jack o lantern, and one wants to win the Biggest Pumpkin award. But then they realize their giant pumpkin is the same pumpkin - they've just been on opposite sides of it working together (unknowingly) to grow a giant pumpkin.

The Pumpkin Book is a great non-fiction addition to your Halloween collection. Gail Gibbons is the go to for children's non-fiction. The stories are still illustrated but give real facts. In this book, children learn about the pumpkin life cycle, types of pumpkins, the history of carved pumpkins, and some how to's for carving pumpkins and drying seeds.

The Hallow-Wiener was always a hit as a read aloud. Oscar is a little dog who gets teased all the time. On Halloween, he has the chance to do something brave and change all of that.

Stumpkin is the perfect pumpkin in every way....except he has no stem, so no one wants him for a jack o lantern on Halloween. As Halloween approaches and the other pumpkins get picked, Stumpkin might just get his chance.

Eek! Halloween might be one of the most loved Halloween books at our house. Strange things are happening and the chickens are getting scared....only to be told "Relax silly chickens, it's Halloween!" our most favorite and repeated line of the book.

Five Little Pumpkins is the classic book that goes with the song about five little pumpkins sitting on a gate that ends with them rolling into the night! A looooong time ago, I wrote a blog post and had a five little pumpkins freebie that you can still access.

Penguin and Pumpkin is a part of a series with this cute little pumpkin. In this one, Penguin is curious about fall and takes a journey to a faraway farm. He tries to bring back the joy of the season to his brother Pumpkin.

I hope this helps you find some new Halloween picture books that you can add to your collection for your classroom or your own kids.
